Glossary
WAN
Abbreviation of "Wide Area Network".
WAREHOUSE RECEIPT
Document identifying the goods delivered to the warehouse.
WAREHOUSE-TO-WAREHOUSE CLAUSE
(1) Clause in the transport insurance policy, which determines the beginning and the end of the insurance cover. This insurance policy begins at the goods leaving from the departure warehouse mentioned in the insurance contract and finishes at the arrival warehouse, also mentioned in the insurance contract and which indicates the end of the clause application.
(2) Guarantee covering the goods (packaged for shipping) from the exit of the warehouse of the shipper to the entrance at the warehouse of the recipient.
WASTE
A discarded material, usually with no determined value, that may be subjected to thermal treatment to accomplish volume and/or hazard reduction (destruction and removal) in an incinerator. It may be either of natural or synthetic origin.
WASTE DISPOSAL
Options exercised to properly place a treated waste into the environment (e.g., dispersal into air or water, or containment in landfill).
WASTE HEAT
Thermal energy which is unused during an industrial process and which is discharged into the ambient environment in heat form.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
The overall system for assessment, minimization, transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of waste.
WASTE REDUCTION
Options exercised to reduce waste before its generation (e.g. raw material substitution, process modification, source separation, recycling, etc).
WASTE TREATMENT
Options exercised to reduce the volume and/or hazard of a waste (wastewater treatment, incineration) after its generation and before waste disposal.
WASTEWATER
Waste constituents dissolved or suspended at dilute concentrations in an aqueous stream.
WATER COLUMN
A vertical tubular member connected at its top and bottom to the steam and water space respectively of a boiler, to which the water gauge, water level controls, and fuel cutoff may be connected.
WATER GAS
A mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
Detector: Infra-red analyser.
TLV 0.08% by volume.
Toxic, explosive, flammable.
WATER VAPOUR
A synonym for steam, usually used to denote steam of low absolute pressure. Gaseous phase of water. A common constituent of indoor air. Insufficient quantities (relative humidity less than 40% approx) may give rise to discomfort for the occupants and damage to some building materials. If too much is present (relative humidity greater than 70% approx.) It may give rise to condensation, mould growth, rot etc.
WATT
The amount of power required to maintain a current of 1 ampere at a pressure of one volt when the two are in phase with each other. One horsepower is equal to 746 watts.
WAVELENGTH
(1) Sound that passes through air produces a wavelike motion of compression and refraction.
(2) Wavelength is the distance between two identical positions in the cycle or wave. Similar to ripples (waves) produced by dropping a stone in water.
(3) Length of sound wave varies with frequency: low frequency is created by longer wavelengths, whereas high frequency is produced by shorter wavelengths.
WEEP
A term usually applied to a minute leak in a boiler joint which forms droplets (or tears) of water very slowly.
WET-BULB TEMPERATURE
(1) Thermodynamic wet bulb temperature is the temperature at which liquid or solid water, by evaporating into air, can bring the air to saturation adiabatically at the same temperature.
(2) Wet bulb temperature (without qualification) is the temperature indicated by a wet bulb psychrometer constructed and used according to specifications.
WET STEAM
Steam containing moisture.
WETNESS
A term used to designate the percentage of water in steam. Also used to describe the presence of a water film on heating surface interiors.
WHARFAGE
Fees invoiced by the owner of the wharf or docks for the handling of the imported or exported cargo.
WIND
Air in motion relative to the surface of the earth. In meteorology referring to the horizontal component of the flow almost exclusively.
WINDBOX PRESSURE
The static pressure in the windbox of a burner.
WINDBREAK
A barrier designed to obstruct wind flow and intended for protection against excessive wind pressure (usually artificial).
WINDING
Typically refers to the process of wrapping coils of copper wire around a core, usually of steel.
WPI
Weather Protected, Type I. (electric motor)
WPII
Weather Protected, Type II. (electric motor)
WT
Weight.
