An indication of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Units range from 0 (most acidic), to 7 (neutral), to 14 (most alkaline).

PHASE

Description :

The number of individual voltages applied to an AC motor. A single-phase motor has one voltage in the shape of a sine wave applied to it. A three-phase motor has three individual voltages applied to it. The three phases are at 120 degrees with respect to each other so that peaks of voltage occur at even time intervals to balance the power received and delivered by the motor throughout its 360 degrees of rotation.

PHENOLIC RESINS

Description :

A class of resins produced as the condensation product of phenol or substituted phenol and formaldehyde or other aldehydes.

PHYTOSANITARY INSPECTION CERTIFICATE

Description :

PITOT TUBE

Description :

A detector for transmitting the static and dynamic pressure of a moving fluid stream. The difference in the measured pressures is used to determine the velocity of the fluid.

A device used to measure total and static pressures in an airstream.

A device consisting of two concentric tubes, one serving to measure the total or impact pressure existing in the airstream, the other to measure the static pressure only.

PLC

Description :

Programmable logic controller.

PLD

Description :

Programmable logic device.

Description :

Preventive maintenance.

PM-10 (PARTICULATE MATTER, 10 MICRON)

Description :

A measure of total suspended particulate that is less than 10 microns in diameter.

POLARITY

Description :

As applied to electric circuits, polarity indicates which terminal is positive and which is negative. As applied to magnets, it indicates which pole is North and which pole is South.

A class of chlorinated organic chemicals found at very low levels in combustion sources.

POLYCHLORINATED DIBENZO-P-DIOXIN (PCDD)

Description :

A class of chlorinated organic chemicals found at very low levels in combustion sources.

POWER SYSTEM

Description :

The interconnected facilities of an electrical utility. A power system includes the generation, transmission, distribution, transformation, and protective components necessary to provide service.

PPI

Description :

Programmed peripheral interface.

PPM

Description :

Parts per million.

PREHEAT

Description :

A coil used to raise the outside air temperature above freezing, generally to 35°F.

Process of raising the temperature.

Description :

The normal force exerted by a homogeneous liquid or gas, per unit of area, on the wall of its container.

PRESSURISATION (PRESSURIZATION(US))

Description :

A method of testing for air leakage of a building or component by installing a powerful fan in the building envelope, e.g. through a door or window, and creating a static pressure excess inside the building. The flow rate through the fan and pressure difference across the envelope are measured and air leakage assessed.

PRIMARY AIR FAN (PA FAN)

Description :

Primary air fans (PA fans) are used for controlling airflow into a pulverizer (used to grind coal). The air amount and velocity will help in the combustion of fuel for the steam-generating boiler. The air drawn from the air heater is usually in a temperature range between 400 degrees and 700 degrees F, depending upon the size of the boiler. The operating temperatures of the PA fans will require thermal insulation for heat conservation and may also require acoustical sound and noise protection.
