A device that measures pressure difference.
MANOMETRIC PRESSURE
The pressure measured by a manometer.
MASKING
The process by which the threshold of hearing one sound is raised due to the presence of another sound.
MASS BALANCE
Calculations made to determine the amount of oxygen (combustion air) needed to ensure optimal combustion of fuels and wastes, or to determine the amounts of any other chemical reactants or final products.
MASTIC (ALSO LUTING)
(1) A pale yellow gum resin from the lentisk and other trees used for varnish, cement...
(2) A bituminous or oily cement, (which does not dry out), used for sealing gaps subject to changes in size.
MATERIAL
An undiscarded substance of some determined value that may be thermally converted to make a useful product in an industrial furnace or other type of high-temperature chemical processing unit. It may be of either natural or synthetic origin (e.g., raw material, process intermediate or secondary material).
MECHANICAL TURBULENCE
(1) The erratic movement of air caused by local obstructions such as buildings.
(2) Turbulence generated by mechanical means e.g. fans, opening doors.
MECHANICAL VENTILATION
Ventilation by means of one or more fans.
MEGAWATT (MW)
A unit of bulk power; 1000 kilowatts.
METHANE (CH4)
Detectors: Total hydrocarbon analyser, flame ionisation detector with or without gas chromatograph.
Advantages: Easily detectable, inexpensive monitoring equipment.
Disadvantages: Background concentrations, flammable, explosive.
MHZ
Megahertz.

A unit of length.
MICROORGANISM
A minute organism; microbes, bacteria, cocci, viruses, moulds, etc., are microorganisms.
MILLIGRAM (MG)
A unit of weight in the metric system. One thousand milligrams equal one gram.
MILLIGRAMS PER CUBIC METER (MG/M3)
Unit used to measure air concentrations of dusts, gases, mists, and fumes.
MILLILITRE (ML)
A metric unit used to measure volume. One millilitre equals one cubic centimetre.
MIN
Minute or minimum.
MINIMUM VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS
The minimum quantity of fresh air, per hour, entering a room (or building) required to maintain acceptable air quality.
MIPS
Million of instructions per second.
MIXED AIR
The part of an HVAC system where the return air (RA) is mixed with the outside air (OF);
The air resulting from this mixing.
MIXTURE
A solid waste and a hazardous waste that may be assumed to become hazardous upon combination.
ML
Millilitre.
MM
Millimetre (length).
MM/MIN
Millimetres per minute.
MM/REV

Cubic millimetres per hour.
MM3/MIN
Cubic millimetres per minute.
MM3/S
Cubic millimetres per second.
MODULATE
To control a damper or valve so that it may assume any position between full open and full closed, as well as these two positions.
MODULATION
Of a control, tending to adjust by increments and decrements.
MOIST AIR (ALSO HUMID AIR)
A mixture of clean dry air and water vapour for which the vapour pressure (density) is less than the saturated vapour pressure (density) at the same temperature.
MOLD (OR MOULD)
A growth of fungi forming a furry patch, as on stale bread or cheese.
A hollow form or matrix into which molten material is poured to produce a cast.
MOTOR HOUSING
The body of the fan which encloses the motor.
MOVING INDICATOR
A method of visualising air flow by introducing visible particulates e.g. smokes of ammonium chloride, titanium tetrachloride, evaporated paraffin oil mixture, tobacco. also metaldehyde, soap bubbles, gas filled balloons etc.
MS
Millisecond.
MTBF
Mean time between failures.
MTTF
Mean-time-to-failure.
MTTR
Mean time to repair.
MULTIZONE
An HVAC system supplying air to two or more locations, each location having its own thermostat. The thermostat controls the delivered air temperature by controlling damper positions connected to a hot deck/cold deck.
MUTAGEN
Any chemical or physical agent that causes a gene change (mutation) or speeds up the rate of mutation.
MUTAGENIC AGENT
Any chemical substance or physical agent that is capable of enhancing the frequency of detectable mutants within a population of organisms.
MUTATION
A sudden, usually rare, change in the genetic code of an organism and results in a change in function that is inheritable.
MWC (MUNICIPAL WASTE COMBUSTOR)
An incinerator operated for the express purpose of burning municipal wastes and usually dedicated to public use and supported by tax funds and/or user fees.
