Glossary
L
Litre; also length.
L/MIN
Litre per minute.
LAMBDA VALUE (ALSO K-VALUE)
The coefficient of thermal conductivity of a material.
LATENT HEAT
Heat added or removed during a change of state.
LB
Pound.
LDR (LAND DISPOSAL RESTRICTIONS)
A series of EPA regulations that require wastes be treated to certain standards prior to disposal on the land.
LEAKAGE
Discharge of a fluid from some containers.
Volume of gas lost through holes in pipes or fittings, bad joints, or broken pipes or fittings.
Unwanted leaving of air through spaces in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning duct work due to poor construction or design.
Unwanted loss, or leak, of something which escapes from its proper location.
The undesirable passage of current of the surface of or through an insulator.
LETTER OF CREDIT
Financial document emitted by a bank at the buyer's request (the applicant) for the vendor (the beneficiary). This document guarantees the payment to the vendor if the terms and conditions specified in the L/C are met. Usually, it contains a short description of the goods, requested documents, date of shipment and date of expiry after which the payment will not be carried out any more. There are various types of L/C, relative to the different levels of security offered to the beneficiary (exporter/vendor).
LOAD
The work required of a motor to drive attached equipment. Expressed in horsepower or torque at a certain motor speed.
Indicates a rate of flow of energy for either a heating or cooling requirement or a total of both (expressed in terms of BTU per hour, BTU per month or BTU per year).
The amount of heat per unit time imposed on a refrigerant system, or the required rate of heat removal.
LOCAL EXHAUST VENTILATION Â
An industrial ventilation system that captures and removes emitted contaminants before dilution into the ambient air of the workplace.
LOCKED ROTOR CURRENT
Measured current with the rotor locked and with rated voltage and frequency applied to the motor.
LOCKED ROTOR TORQUE
Measured torque with the rotor locked and with rated voltage and frequency applied to the motor.
LOSS
A financial situation for an individual, company or government where expenses exceed income.
LOSS OF MARKET
A situation in which, for one reason or another, sound cargo is no longer wanted by the consignee when it arrives. This is a "business loss" not recoverable under a Marine Cargo Policy; e.g., Christmas trees arriving in January undamaged.
LOUDNESS
A listener’s auditory impression of the strength of a sound. The average deviation above and below the static value due to a sound wave is called sound pressure. The energy expended during the sound wave vibration is called intensity and is measured in intensity units. Loudness is the physical resonance to sound pressure and intensity.
LOUVER
An assembly of sloping vanes intended to permit air to pass through and to inhibit transfer of water droplets.
LOW LIMIT
The minimum desirable, or safe, temperature; the alarm given when the measured temperature drops below this selected temperature.
LOWER EXPLOSIVE LIMIT (LEL) (ALSO KNOWN AS LOWER FLAMMABLE LIMIT-LFL)
The lowest concentration of a substance that will produce a fire or flash when an ignition source (flame, spark, etc.) is present. It is expressed in percent of vapour or gas in the air by volume. Below the LEL or LFL, the air/contaminant mixture is theoretically too "lean" to burn.
